What we do
Ridge Capping Re-Bedding & Re-Pointing on the Sunshine Coast
Ridge and hip caps sit on a bed of mortar and are sealed along the edge with pointing. Traditional mortar pointing is rigid; the roof expands and contracts every day in Queensland heat, and a published guide notes the mortar typically cracks within 8 to 15 years. Once it cracks, water gets under the caps, the bedding washes out, and in a storm the caps can lift. The Sunshine Coast sits in wind Region B, so loose caps are a real risk, not a cosmetic one.
Re-bedding means lifting caps that have lost their bed, cleaning off the old mortar and laying them on fresh mortar. Re-pointing means replacing the cracked pointing along every cap with a flexible polymer pointing compound, applied to AS 2050:2018 Installation of roof tiles. The flexible product bonds to tile and mortar and stretches with movement, which is why it is now the standard on every restoration we do. A typical single-storey home has 8 to 14 metres of main ridge and 4 to 8 metres of hip.
What's included
Inspection of every ridge and hip
We check each cap for movement, cracked bedding and pointing that has let go.
Re-bedding loose caps
Caps lifted, old mortar removed, new mortar bed laid and the cap set true.
Flexible re-pointing
All caps re-pointed with flexible pointing in a colour to match the tile or the new coating.
Gable and barge caps
Gable ends and barge caps done in the same visit, as in our gable before-and-after.
Weep holes and drainage kept clear
Pointing applied so the ridge still drains and does not trap water.
Done as part of a restoration or on its own
Re-pointing is included in every full restoration and available as a standalone job.
Signs your ridge capping needs work

- A cap sitting crooked or rocking when pushed
- Water stains on the ceiling directly under a ridge or hip
