Roofs in Sunshine Beach: what we see and what we do
Sunshine Beach climbs steeply from the surf to the ridge along David Low Way, and its roofs face the ocean with nothing in between. The original 1960s to 80s beach houses carry low-pitch concrete tiles and the odd terracotta roof, while a steady run of rebuilds has added architect-designed metal roofs and Colorbond on multi-level homes stepping down the dune. Being in Noosa Shire, nothing is built tall, so every roof is exposed to the same salt wind.
Everything within 200 metres of the surf is C5 under the AS 4312 corrosivity guide, the harshest band for housing, and most of the suburb qualifies. Steel screws, valleys, gutters and flashings corrode years ahead of inland roofs, and the UV is relentless.
