Gutter & Fascia Painting on the Sunshine Coast

Gutters and fascia take the same sun and salt as the roof and fade at the same rate. Factory-coated steel gutters chalk and lose colour, timber fascia and barge boards weather grey and start to split at the joins, and the paint on gables and eaves lifts wherever water has sat. Most homeowners only notice once the roof has been restored and the trim beside it looks tired. That is why we quote gutter and fascia painting with nearly every roof restoration: the scaffold, edge protection and access are already in place, and the roofline is finished in one visit rather than two.

Preparation is the difference between a paint job that lasts and one that peels in two summers. Steel gutters are washed of salt and chalk, sanded and spot-primed with a metal primer wherever the coating has gone through; timber fascia and barge boards are scraped, sanded, filled and primed with a timber primer. Then two coats of exterior acrylic in the colour you choose. Popular pairings on the coast are a Monument or Woodland Grey roof with matching gutters and a lighter fascia, or Surfmist trim under a charcoal roof. Colour matches to most Colorbond colours are available.

Where a gutter is rusted through, sagging or holding water, painting is a waste of money and we will say so. A published Sunshine Coast guide puts gutter replacement at $39 to $105 per metre, and new gutters can be fitted in the same visit as the roof. Painting the rest of the roofline still makes sense in that case, and we quote the two parts separately so the invoice is clear.

Gutter & Fascia Painting: common questions

Can you paint Colorbond gutters?

Yes. Faded factory-coated steel takes exterior acrylic well once it is washed, sanded and spot-primed where the original coating has worn through. The result is close to new and it can be a different colour if you are changing the roof. Gutters rusted through are replaced instead.

Do I have to paint the gutters when the roof is restored?

No, but most people do once they see the new roof beside the old trim. The access is already up, so it is cheaper in the same visit than as a separate job later. We quote it as a line item so you can leave it out if the trim is fine.

How long does gutter and fascia painting take?

A single-storey home is usually a day of prep and a day of painting, done in the same week as the roof. Two-storey homes and houses with a lot of timber fascia take longer because of the access and the extra preparation the timber needs.

Will the paint hold up to the salt air?

With the right prep and primer, yes. Salt is washed off before anything is painted, bare steel gets a metal primer and timber gets a timber primer, then two coats of exterior acrylic. Paint over chalk or salt is what peels, and skipping the wash is the usual reason a cheap job fails early.
